What is Saudi Arabia’s Haramain high-speed train?

Friday, November 3, 2017

Al Haramain Express will be Saudi Arabia’s first high-speed inter-city railway system that will transport passengers from Mecca to Medina (vice-versa) via Jeddah and King Abdullah Economic City. In July this year, the Saudi Railways Organisation had successfully conducted a trial run from Jeddah to Medina.

How much distance will it cover?

The Haramain Express is a 453-km long (281 miles) railway network that will connect the holy cities of Mecca and Medina and aims to offer a comfortable, fast and secure transportation option for travellers.

How fast is the train?

The Haramain Express will achieve speeds of more than 300 km/h (190 mph) cutting travel time between the two cities to as low as 90 minutes. The train is expected to carry nearly three million passengers a year. When it’s fully operationalised, it could carry as many as 60 million passengers annually. Talgo coaches from Spain have been ordered to do duty.

The project is still under construction and will likely be completed by the first quarter of 2018, as reported by HajjandUmrah360.com.
