Twitter Has Some Fun Plans for Ramadan

Wednesday, May 16, 2018

For anyone who frequently uses Twitter, the beauty of the platform has always been its public nature and its immediacy. Being able to have real-time access to information from a pool of sources the user can filter is an idea that still holds up (at least until the algorithms took over).

During the month of Ramadan, Twitter is using that publicness and immediacy to implement a bunch of new Twitter-exclusive activations that Muslims all over the world can enjoy. Among these updates are new emojis and icons that will crop up whenever someone uses the appropriate hashtags for Ramadan. They were nice enough to cover wide ground of phrases and languages for this,

In addition, there will also be live Periscope broadcasts from the Holy Mosque from Makkah brought to you by the Ministry of Culture and Information in Saudi Arabia (@MOCI_KSA on Twitter), doing daily broadcasts of the evening prayers from 8:30 PM to 10:30 PM KSA.

Twitter is also collaborating with YallaFeed on MENA's first live show, #HawanahZein that will be streaming during the holy month. Sponsored by Unilever, the show will stream every Monday and Thursday from 12:00 AM to 12:20 AM KSA via @YallaFeed, with the first episode going up on May 17 (that's tomorrow).

Other plans include a TV Guide Direct Message Experience with Arabic Lifestyle publication Layalina, where users can send Direct Messages to @Layalina to get lists of TV channels, shows, and timings, as well as daily recaps of all their favourite shows based on their selection.

There will also be Live Celebrity Q&A sessions on Twitter throughout the month, where cans can tweet their questions at their favourite stars using a specific hashtag - the actual hashtag hasn't been announced. Throughout the month, partners all over MENA will be producing Twitter Moments, which are essentially collections of tweets across a range of topics including lifestyle, fashion, beauty, and other Ramadan-specific trending topics which, if Twitter is anything to go by, will probably change very erratically making sure there's always something fun to check out.

These new plans come, no doubt, in light of the massive usage spike Twitter saw during Ramadan last year, with 118 million Ramadan-related conversations happening globally. The UAE along showed an 18% increase in Twitter usage during Ramadan in 2016, so it's good to see the company getting involved in the holy month in a big way.
