RIYADH: About 8,700 electric cars and wheelchairs will be provided for the elderly, sick and pilgrims with special needs to use free of charge in the Grand Mosque in Makkah and the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah, the Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques has announced.

The presidency will also supervise the wheelchair pushers, and provide them with the necessary permits.

It has also allocated 209 personnel who will work round the clock in shifts to monitor the pushers and assistants to ensure they are abiding by the rules as set by the authorities and are not overcharging pilgrims.

The director of the transport services, Saleh Mohammed Ali Hiusawi, said the presidency is making every effort to streamline Hajj and Umrah for pilgrims.

“It has recruited more than 3,000 Saudi youths and increased the number of paths.

“It is also supervising the operation of electric cars and has introduced counters at service locations and paths leading to them, with staff to respond to pilgrims’ inquiries,” he added.
