MADINAH: The Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage (SCTH) in Madinah celebrated World Heritage Day on Sunday at the city’s Hejaz Railway Museum, the Saudi Press Agency reported. Researchers and history enthusiasts participated in the event.

“World Heritage Day activities highlight the work done by the SCTH to preserve the Kingdom’s heritage. It does so by showcasing the Kingdom’s heritage sites, and Madinah’s sites, in particular, through its programs and working to safeguard them for they have a pivotal role in shaping our future,” said the general manager of SCTH’s Madinah branch, Faisal bin Khalid Al-Madani. “This occasion comes as a renewed opportunity for specialists to shed light on heritage and its importance among different generations.”

Training sessions contributed to the formation of qualified personnel to better protect the Kingdom’s heritage, he added.

Madinah has numerous heritage museums and sites that constitute important tourist destinations for the region’s visitors such as the Hejaz Railway Museum.

Last month, the Saudi Culture Ministry and UNESCO signed a memorandum of understanding in Paris aimed at promoting cooperation in culture and preserving heritage.

The cooperation will focus on preserving and repairing heritage sites, as well as on developing the arts, festivals and literature.
