The cleaning came some four months after the latest one conducted ahead of this year’s Hajj pilgrimage.

Considering some restrictions, a team comprised of 10 men climbed to the roof of the holy site and performed the cleaning process on Monday.

The cleaning mechanism takes place through several stages, the first of which is sweeping the surface of the Holy Kaaba, removing dust and bird droppings, then wiping the entire surface and holder of the cladding, the wall, and the door to the surface of the Holy Kaaba from the outside with wet towels. Then, everything is sprayed with water and wiped again and then a drying process is conducted.

Saudi Arabia has recently lifted pandemic-related restrictions at the Two Holy Mosques in Mecca and Medina, citing improvement of conditions.

Meanwhile, operations to clean and sanitize different areas of the mosque or ongoing.

Jaber al-Wadaani, director of the sanitation and carpet department at the Grand Mosque, said that the General Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques has established a dedicated carpet cleaning center in Kudai with the latest high-tech tools and equipment. He said 1,500 carpets are washed weekly in Kudai to maintain standards and ensure the safety of worshippers.

The center has a team of specialists working to ensure the cleaning meets its standards and to confirm that the carpets are returned to the mosque free of flaws, the official added.
